Commonwealth 2011 Short Story Competition-Online Entries and Awards January 2011

Commonwealth Foundation believes in giving a voice to the voiceless, bringing people together and promoting cultural expression and exchange. Commitment to diversity, development, democracy, good governance and human rights, all core Commonwealth values, help guide Commonwealth Foundation work.

These values are rooted in declarations agreed by all Commonwealth member states. Major declarations include the 1971 Singapore Principles, 1991 Harare Declaration and, today, the 2009 Trinidad and Tobago Affirmation.

Commonwealth Foundation vision is of a Commonwealth where civil society organisations can realise their potential and engage with governments and the private sector in the shared enterprise of nation-building and international co-operation

More than two billion people in 54 countries across six continents from Antigua and Barbuda to Zambia can count themselves to be citizens of the Commonwealth.

Membership extends to rich and poor nations alike in both northern and southern hemispheres. Some member states are landlocked, others are small island nations. Each faces its own unique challenges.

All 54 Commonwealth governments are eligible to become members of the Commonwealth Foundation. Total membership stands today at 47 countries. Associated states or overseas territories may apply for associate member status. Gibraltar is currently an associate member.
