The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) ex WARDA is an association of 24 African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) ex WARDA is temporarily headquartered in Cotonou, Benin.

The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) is a global partnership that unites organizations engaged in research for sustainable development with the funders of this work. The funders include developing and industrialized country governments, foundations, and international and regional organizations. The work they support is carried out by 15 members of the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers, in close collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations, including national and regional research institutes, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector.

The following positions are currently open:

Position: PostDoctoral Fellow (PDF) in Remote Sensing and GIS (for mapping abiotic stresses in rice systems)
Ref: IRS/07/RD/December 2010
Location: Cotonou
Responsibilities: The Post
Doctoral Fellow will be based at the temporary headquarters of AfricaRice in Cotonou, Benin and will work under the supervision of the Program 2 Leader. She or he will be responsible for:
Evaluating and applying methodologies for mapping the distribution of rice in different

ecosystems in Africa using remote sensing, GIS and national statistics;
The development, validation and
application of innovative approaches to map abiotic
and biotic stress distribution in rice production systems in Africa;
Performing spatial analysis in a GIS environment to identify suitable areas for adoption of
stress
tolerant varieties by combining remote sensing obtained maps and survey data;
Essential Requirements: The successful candidate should have:
a PhD degree in Ecology or Agriculture with a specialisation in remote sensing
applications, or a PhD degree in Geo
information Science (remote sensing) with a strong background in agriculture and environment;
at least two years’ experience in using remote sensing software like ERDAS Imagine or ENVI;
experience is handling large data sets;
experience in the use of various types of satellite images such as WorldView, Quickbird, Spot, Landsat, Aster, ResourceSat and MODIS;
Desirable Requirements:
Experience in the use of GIS software like ArcGIS;
Programming skills, preferably in IDL;
Working experience in rice areas, and
Strong scientific publication record.

Under the general supervision of the Head of Program 4 and the direct supervision of the Agricultural Economist in Dar es Salaam, the Research Assistant will have the following responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
The Research Assistant will be a part of a multi-disciplinary research team with a
common goal of and responsible for working to sustain and improve the productivity of and competitivity of rice-based production systems in Africa consistent with Africa Rice Center’s mission and mandate. He/she will assist the program leader in conducting research within the team with the specific tasks that include, but not limited to:
• Assist to generate profiles of rice-based production systems in key ecologies along the upland-lowland continuum in Africa.
• Assist in identifying opportunities and constraints to improving performance of the rice based systems.
• Assist in developing crop budgets and farm models to assess and identify optimal production and resource allocation decisions in rice-based systems along the upland-lowland continuum.
Profile and experience
• Master’s Degree or equivalent in Agro-Economics, Economics with specialization in production economics, policy analysis or impact assessment;
• Good capacity in data analysis and the use of software such as SPSS, Stata, EViews and other relevant software;
• Good knowledge in database management and the use of computer tools (Excel, Access, etc.);
• Ability to work under minimum supervision and in a multi-disciplinary and multicultural environment;
• Experience in an international institution would be an asset;
• Ability to innovate and to take initiatives;
• Capacity to work in team and collaborate with scientists from the National Agricultural Research Systems;
• Ability to communicate and to be open to changes;
• A good command of English;
• A working knowledge of French would be an asset;
• Knowledge of the key agricultural issues in the African context in general and in the Eastern Southern African region would be an asset;

Qualifications:

Expatriates at Nestlé make a long-term commitment to carry out a series of two to three year assignments abroad, moving from one country to another.

How an Expatriate Career Works

When you join Nestlé you would typically have an initial four to six months' training and orientation programme in three or four different Nestlé factories. You would also be coached by specialists at the Headquarters.

Time pressure is high as you have between 2-4 weeks only in a unit to complete the project. The team members will stay together during the 12 week assignment before they rotate.
